Andrea McGinn

Collaborative Attorney, Mediator & Peacemaker

From the moment you step into her office, Andrea greets you with respect and a smile. She wants to hear your story and guide you through your legal proceedings with compassion and knowledge, so you can come out on the other side feeling heard and ready to take on the next chapter in your life.

Andrea grew up in Runnells, Iowa, on the family farm. She now resides in Pleasant Hill with her husband, Nick, their son Nolan, and their bulldog Leonidus (Leo). When Andrea isn’t in the office, she is enjoying the company of family and friends, traveling (Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, is her favorite), or floating on a boat at their family lake house in Missouri.

Her son, Nolan, is just a toddler (he keeps Andrea and Nick on their toes). Family is Andrea’s number one priority, and she maintains this position in her law practice by staying focused on the long-range best interests of her clients and their children.

Andrea attended the University of Iowa for undergrad and majored in psychology (Go Hawks!). She then moved to Des Moines, where she graduated from Drake Law School. Andrea’s attention to detail and knowledge of the law, combined with her empathetic practice style, ensure that you and your family will be in good hands throughout your legal journey. She will do everything she can to help you come out on the other side feeling like your story was told and you received a fair outcome for you and your family.

Andrea enjoys practicing in the areas of family law, including collaborative divorce, traditional divorce, custody, child support, private termination of parental rights, and adoptions. She also practices juvenile law, assisting families with children in need of assistance. Andrea has experience in the areas of real estate and estate planning, including handling various real estate transactions and preparing wills, powers of attorney, and other future planning documents. She welcomes anyone into her peaceful, remodeled office space in Van Meter.

“I have known Amy J. Skogerson for many years. Over my many years of being in practice, I have found that lawyers who are successful are those who have earned the respect of their colleagues. Amy has achieved that lofty goal. She has earned the respect of her colleagues.”  - Patrick L. Wilson, Attorney, Des Moines, Iowa
"Andrea, you're a blessing to us, and words can't explain how deeply happy we are that we chose you to be a part of our lives. Sincerely, we couldn't have done it without you. Your commitment to your work is very appreciated, and we will never forget this. We will definitely stay in touch. I guess you can say I've chosen an outstanding attorney. :) Thank you very much for all your hard work!" – Luis and Amanda
"I cannot recommend Amy highly enough. She was everything I was looking for in a collaborative divorce lawyer: understanding, nonjudgmental, caring. Amy was prepared for every meeting and was prompt and efficient in completing whatever tasks became her responsibility. I could trust her to bring my best interests to any and all discussions; I knew she had my back through the entire process. I couldn't ask for anything more." - Ben
“Amy has been a great volunteer for Y Camp, earning our Volunteer of the Year Award first in 2012 and then again with her husband Erik in 2014.  She will be Y Camp’s first female Board Chairperson, having already served as Vice Chairperson and Chair of the Property Committee.  She also organized a great community event fundraiser for camp.  Amy has been and continues to be one of our best volunteers, she truly cares about serving others!”  ~David Sherry, Executive Director, Des Moines YMCA Camp
